In most farms in the Pantanal region the cattle farming is an activity with a reduced supply of external inputs and that maximize the use of natural resources. In order to add value to their production, some ranchers have chosen to certify their properties as organics. A panel of local producers held in 2011 analyzed the cost of production and fattening of calves on a farm that is representative of the Pantanal organic beef cattle system. The total area of the representative farm was estimated at 13,204 hectares with total herd of 1,462 cattle heads, and annual production of 13,611.92 arrobas (15 kg) of certified meat. The most significant items in the effective operating cost (COE) were administrative costs (taxes, certifications, etc.), and mineral salt supplementation, 19.51% and 19.19% respectively. The COE was estimated at R$_601,767.92, and gross revenue at R$_1,610,217.85 (R$ 1.00 = US$ 1.67 in 2011). The total operational cost (TOC), which is the COE with the depreciation of buildings, machinery and pastures, was R$_860,514.64. The expansion of organic production systems in the Pantanal depends on adds higher value to the product,
which can occur due to the importance of environmental conservation for the region. |
